I was appointed to fill the position as Police and Fire Commissioner after a vacancy existed when Mrs. Cynthia Strang moved from the village to Arizona. The appointment was part of the committee's appointment made by the mayor and as the commissioner; I am the liaison to council for both the Police Chief and the Fire Chief. The commission is made up of three members. Being the only council member on this committee; I act as chairperson with two citizens from the community making up the remainder of the committee. Mrs. Laura Hoffmann is the senior member of the community with Mr. Jason Carthen being the most recent appointed at the council meeting of August 8, 2006.
The duties of the commission are to review materials provided by the two chiefs when recommending officers or firemen for appointment. We carefully review the work history of such and the training and expertise level at which each person will be able to participate within the department. This committee also reviews updates to the codified ordinance with help of the city solicitor for suggestions and leadership.
As the commissioner, I feel my main purpose is to make sure that both of these departments function at a level to protect each and every member of the community. Also, it is my duty to keep council informed of the needs within these two departments.
